Value of volunteer time among clubs along BC west coast
estimated to be $1.5 million, and worldwide over $1b
From sponsoring water parks for children and their families, developing an outdoor fitness course, providing food for children of low income families, to running a bathtub race, cleaning up a street, opening First Nations learning centres, shipping medical equipment to communities in other countries or supplying clean water in Southeast Asia where there is need, the 50 Rotary clubs in Greater Vancouver up the coast to Prince Rupert generated more than 68,500 volunteer hours of service among their 1,500 members in the past year.
According to calculations in a special Value of Rotary Volunteering report by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Civil Society Studies, the monetary value of that time devoted to local, regional and international projects is $1,514,250 in 2017-18 (based on a conservative rate of US$18 per hour). The total time for the 50 clubs over the past five years has been 160,200 hours for an estimated value of $3,604,500.

International peacebuilding recognition of local Rotarian
With its international "Citation for Meritorious Service", The Rotary Foundation has recognized Gloria Staudt, of the Rotary Club of New Westminster Royal City, for her contribution to the cause of peace and conflict resolution as chair of the Rotary District 5040 Peace Fellow Selection Committee over the past nine years.
One way Rotary District 5040 makes a valuable contribution to peace and conflict resolution in our world -- one of Rotary's six primary areas of focus -- is through recommending candidates every year for Peace Fellowship scholarships in 50 Master's degree programs and 50 Certificate programs at six universities around the world. The annual funding for this US$9 million program comes from the international Rotary Foundation.

District Governor Greetings
District 5040 Governor Bala Naidoo and Vasi
Welcome to the 2019-2020 Rotary year as Rotary Connects the World with President Mark Maloney! It is an exciting time as we embrace the latest Rotary International Strategic Plan.
We are also engaging in our own District 5040 Transitional Plan which takes a new approach with our District and Club Leadership Teams working together to develop a unified vision in growing through our nine Geographic Areas.
Our overall goal is to take an integrated approach with our Assistant Governors’ leading the way as "Area CEO’s". We aim to set our District goals starting with each club and each Area deciding the key metrics for its own Rotary "community" about what can be sustained over the next few years. This means more collaboration as we become more Community and Area focused in the spirit of working together to achieve more rather than being club only focused.
We are already seeing the benefits of this approach with many clubs sharing resources in joint projects, joint fund raisers, common public relations initiatives, joint membership events and collaboration to start new clubs for serving our local community’s changing needs with alternative club models.
Our first priority is to engage our Assistant Governors together with our club Presidents over the next 60 days to agree on some key focused metrics. That way our District maximizes our opportunities for each of our unique communities. We will then engage in a “Listening Tour” to each club and community so that we learn how to support you in the best possible way going forward.
I am very excited to work together with you to build on a great foundation that already exists in our District and which you have helped build over time. Stay tuned as we work together to collectively achieve more!
Yours in Rotary service,
Bala Naidoo
Rotary District 5040 Governor
