Downtown Vancouver lights up for polio and End Polio
Vancouver City Hall, BC Place Stadium and Telus Science World will light up in blue or gold this Sunday, April 26, 2020 to salute Rotary and its fight to rid the world of polio.

Members of Rotary District 5040 were to have participated in a march along the Vancouver harbourfront that morning to raise awareness and funds for the global campaign Rotary launched 35 years ago when there were 350,000 cases of polio in 122 countries per year. The march was cancelled in keeping with health advisories related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Joined over time by international health organizations, foundations and governments, Rotary’s campaign has reduced the number of cases to less than 200 in just two countries in 2019. It is estimated that it will take more than a three-year projection of US$4 billion to rid the world completely of polio, as smallpox was eliminated in the past.

District Governor Greetings
District 5040 Governor Bala Naidoo and Vasi

I trust that you and your family are safe and coping with all the economic and health issues that face us during these uncertain times! It is so heartwarming to see that most of our clubs are innovating and finding new ways of connecting with your members during this unprecedented time of uncertainty due to the impact  of Covid-19 in each of your communities. Zoom and alternate meetings platforms have become the new normal for all of us as we retool to deal with new normal as we isolate and keep safe and follow our health advisories. Thank you for following these guidelines as we continue to keep connected with our members and further our work in our respective communities! We are hearing of many stories of how each club continues to ensure connection with impacted members ,especially our tenured members who may be affected due to this isolation.

I have been busy with bi-weekly calls with our Rotary International Director Jeffrey Cadorette; RID Elect  Valerie Wafer & RIP Mark Maloney who are calling for us to continue our humanitarian quest to become more relevant to our communities in this time of great need in our respective communities. Our District Grants Chair, Ian Grant and Global Grants Chair, Verona Edelstein have been communicating with your club about advance funding for Covid-19 funding during this time to engage in focused community programs during this time of special needs for your community. There is much to be done and our communities need us more than ever today and I know that you will rise to the occasion as you always do !

As expected, the Year Ahead sessions that began a few weeks ago have been best attended sessions in our District history as we are all isolated and technology has made it easier for us to attend as with our club in Zoom or other meeting formats. There is a silver lining as we innovate and find new ways to connect in a different way that may become a new reality as we learn to break away from our traditional meeting formats. This is an opportunity to invite past members; local civic officials; RI resource personnel; District Leaders; joint Area meetings; and others to enhance our meeting experience going forward!

We need to think about alternative ways of on line fund raising and innovate our cancelled events to other platforms that many clubs are now considering as we think about innovative ways in this new world which could be longer than expected in this period of  uncertainty! There are many cancellations of our 2020 programs and we will keep your clubs informed as we navigate the many changes and find new ways of innovating on how we could do things in a different way. We would also welcome any suggestions/ ideas of how we could find alternative ways to maintain our momentum on all our District programs during this unprecedented health and economic uncertainties.

Our 2020 Conference Committee and Leadership Team  is recognizing our 2020 Award recipients on May 24 during the Roskars, an online Zoom event; and we are organizing a new Speaker Series; and coming up with new communication strategies to our Presidents & PE’s as we work through this unprecedented time, stay tuned for more communication on this as we finalize these plans.

The most important thing is to stay engaged in our quest to make the world a better place and stay true to our mission in making our Local & International  communities stronger for a better future! My goal is to attend as many of your club meetings in my last remaining months as this is much easier to do without travel and to stay connected with you during this time.

It is also becoming evident that that it may be some time before we return to a sense of normalcy, and it may be that it will be some time before this happens, so it is imperative that we stay our course and find new ways of carrying our great work to serve humanity despite the current health & economic challenges. I urge you to take care of our own Rotary family during these times and I have asked our District Leadership Team to keep us informed so that we continue to support you as needed. The District is here to serve you and we want you to know we that will provide as much support as we can possibly provide during this time!

Our District Nominating Committee led by IPDG  Darcy Long is happy to inform you that PDG Ken Wilson from the West Vancouver Sunrise RC has been reappointed to be the District 5040 Representative on the Council on Legislation for the 2020-2023 Rotary COL term. PDG Penny Offer will be the alternate Representative should Ken Wilson not be able to complete his term .
Thank you Ken & Penny for your continued work on this important aspect of driving recommendations from our members in the District to Rotary International!

Yours in Rotary service,

Bala
