The 450 pupils and staff at Signal Hill Elementary School in Pemberton, BC now have a more reliable, hands-on outdoor learning space which has strengthened the school’s food-growing program thanks to a new CDN$20,000 greenhouse which adds to its garden program.
Rotary Club of Pemberton contributed CDN$11,000 to the greenhouse project and another $9,000 came from The Rotary Foundation through a District Grant.
The greenhouse extends the growing and teaching season by several weeks. It protects pupils and plants from rain, wind, heat, and unpredictable weather. It also creates space for starting plants, drying and storing crops, and holding garden lessons year-round.
Other benefits of the greenhouse are environmental education, Indigenous food and cultural programming, healthy eating and pupils’ connection to land and food security.

In addition to their funding of the project, members of the Rotary Club of Pemberton helped design the greenhouse and site plan, developed the materials list, coordinated with the structural engineer and local suppliers, ordered and arranged delivery of materials.
They also participated alongside community partners, Pemberton Men’s Shed and Pemberton Lions Club. in the hands-on construction including the foundation, framing, and siding.
