Presidents Elect Learning

Welcome

Presidents Elect of our clubs in District 5040, your club, along with each of the others, is the most important part of our organization throughout Rotary. All our members connect through our clubs to the communities we serve and other members who support and make our work possible around the world.

Thank you for taking on this responsibility, perhaps not for the first time, in preparing to become President of your club in 2022-23.

The District 5040 Learning and Development Team, and the entire District, of 48 clubs, are here to help you with advice and services to make your role as effective and fulfilling for you and, in turn, your board and members.

We hope we can work together in this cohort so that we can support you where and when needed to make the coming year as productive and satisfying as possible.

Self-directed learning

In working with you, the focus is on self-directed learning on your own time. We all bring a huge range of knowledge and experience from our home and work life, and from Rotary, but we all have something more to learn. Networking with other Presidents Elect, some who have served as club presidents in the past, and learning with and from each other is a huge part of this learning program.

PETS

That networking and learning includes the Pacific North-West Presidents Elect Training Seminar (PETS). PEs from roughly 700 clubs in 10 Districts, in BC, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Northern California and Alaska learn from Rotary leaders and, as importantly, each other.

You are encouraged to participate in this learning program, from November 2021 through March 2022 and beyond when you can work with your incoming board to prepare for 2022-23.

Learning Center

Start with your own self-directed learning through the Learning Center. Start as soon as you can so you will not be overloaded in January and February with PETS learning and finally in March.

There are 12 courses in the Rotary International Learning Center set up for our Pacific North-West PETS group for incoming Club Presidents. There are four other optional courses. Please see the section below.

The Learning Center is packed with all sorts of other valuable learning opportunities, relevant to your role this year and next, and to your fellow board and club members.

Learning Center Courses for PEs

Learning Center Courses for PETS

Pacific North West PETS (Presidents Elect Training Seminar), provided by 10 Rotary Districts in British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Northern California and Alaska, including our District 5040, recommends that Presidents Elect take 12 courses in the Learning Center on the Rotary International website.

To access these dedicated courses in the Learning Center, a member needs to have set up their own account in "My Rotary" on the RI website. A tutorial on that process of setting up an account is available on this site.

The 12 courses may require as little as a few minutes to complete or as long as one hour. They provide advice on planning for your year, creating an engaging club experience, and working with your leadership team to help your club run smoothly. The courses cover the following topics. These courses need to be completed by any PE claiming reimbursement for expenses to attend the annual PETS weekend in Seattle, February 18 to 20, 2022.

1. Getting Started With the Learning Center: How can the Learning Center help you? Discover its many features, how to search for courses, take a course and how track your progress. 15m
2. Get Ready: Learn how to run your club, strengthen your membership, conduct successful service projects, and help your club become more vibrant.
3. My Rotary: Download club administration guides to learn how to report club, officer, and member changes on My Rotary for you and your leadership team.
4. Using a Club Management System: Our District uses ClubRunner, but learn how to select a vendor and ensure that it accurately sends your club information to Rotary.
5. Building Strong Intergenerational Relationships: Generational diversity is one of Rotary’s competitive advantages, but we tend to find ourselves segmented by age groups and unable or unwilling to challenge our biases about other age groups.
6. Design an Inclusive Plan for Your Organization: an interactive framework to facilitate a discussion about the diversity of your clubs and organizations.
7. Hybrid Meetings: how to conduct a club meeting with in-person and virtual attendance.
8. Essentials of Understanding Conflict: learn the essentials of how to understand, manage, and resolve conflict.
9. Leading Change: learn the basics of how to manage change, including how to succeed in leading it, how to assess people's readiness to make changes, how to plan for change, and how to respond to any resistance.
10. Resiliency: examines the role of resilience, the factors that can increase and decrease it, how it can be developed and why it is important to you.
11. Committing to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: make it part of the core of the Rotary experience, putting it into practice to creating positive experiences.
12. Uncovering Unconscious Bias: learn about our unconscious biases that affect our decisions and interactions and learn how to counteract them to create more inclusive communities and avoid unintentionally harming others.

PNW PETS also offers, through the Learning Center, these four optional courses, ranging in length from 5 minutes to one hour, again, for you to learn on your own time before PETS if you can:
1. Leadership Basics: This course focuses on fundamental leadership skills including motivating others, leadership integrity and team inclusiveness.
2. Leading Change:  Learn the basics of managing change, how to succeed in leading change, accessing readiness for change, how to plan for change and successfully addressing resistance.
3. Is Your Club Healthy: This course will help you and other Club leaders pinpoint opportunities for improvement of problem areas and create strategies to lead change in your Club.
4. Toastmasters:  Getting Started:  Learn about the courses Rotary is offering through the Toastmaster Alliance that will address your leadership team’s communication.
