Be The Inspiration

Wow, the new Rotary Year is here!!!

And with that it is our new Theme from Rotary International President Barry Rassin – “Be The Inspiration”

All we need to do is continue the momentum of this past year! That was Inspiring!!!

We ended the year with some incredible highs, such as:
A great District Conference with amazing speakers, great fellowship and a chance to exchange ideas on how to continue to bring PEACE to our world.

Congratulations to all the recipients of our District Awards! You are all, as clubs and individuals, our Inspiration! As well as proof that together we can achieve so much more. We truly are part of something special, this organization of Rotary.
The Governor Team Installation in Gibsons on June 16th officiated by Rotary International Vice President Dean Rohrs had a healthy attendance of 76 despite the ferry issues that made it impossible for some folks to make it. Darn and welcome to our world. The sun did shine and everyone had a good time. Special Thanks to Gerry and Wilma Webb from the Sunshine Coast-Sechelt Club for their extra efforts, much appreciated!
Doug and I have had the privilege of joining many of you at your Club Installations this past month and we thank you for that honor. It gave us a little taste of what’s to come as we start the club visits.

We also chartered 2 new clubs at the end of the year so a very special Welcome to the Rotary Family goes out to the Lillooet Rotary Club and the Dragon Club of Greater Vancouver!!
We also showed our commitment to our Foundation with record donations in both the Annual fund and End Polio Now. District 5040 was recognized on stage at the Toronto Convention, placing 10th in the world with our End Polio Now contributions.

So, let’s build on all of these great accomplishments in 2018-2019 and continue to be the People of Action that we are.
Let’s continue to grow our clubs and our Rotary Family and supporting the Countdown To History with the eradication of Polio. We may have already witnessed the very last case…. :-)

This month the emphasis is on change of leadership. So first a huge Thank You to all the last year’s district and club leaders led by PDG Don and Deb. Now, A special shout out to all the new Club Presidents and boards.

The first few days of our new year saw Doug and I join the Rotary Clubs in Williams Lake and our Exchange students from around the world as we celebrated Canada’s Birthday and the William’s Lake Stampede. Check out the video of our exchange students singing “O Canada”.

I have also had the privilege of doing the Installations for the Club of the Year – Vancouver Rotary Club and the Ladner Rotary Club.

As well I flew up to Terrace to visit RYLA Lakelse and drop into the Rotary Club at Smithers with new Assistant Governor Bill Parmar, to share a meal and lay the ground work for Doug and I to help out at their Fall Fair in August.

That was all in the first 6 days!!!!

Next week will see Doug and I hit the road and start the club visits. We are so looking forward to coming out and being Inspired by all that you and your clubs are doing!!!

Thank you for this opportunity to serve as your District Governor. The DnD Team is truly humbled and we will do our best to Be The Inspiration!

In 2018-2019 let’s all live the Rotary Vision statement:
Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – change across the globe, in our communities, and in our selves.

Yours in Rotary,

Darcy and Doug

Rotaract Update

While June tends to be a slower month at the club level it was a busy one at the district and international levels. We had Rotaractors present at the Peacing it Together Conference in Squamish, the Rotaract District Dinner in Vancouver, the RI Convention in Toronto, and RYLA North America in Washington DC.

Prince George Rotaractor, Simran Jawanda had this to say about the Peacing it Together Conference: "Attending District Conference provided me with the opportunity to connect with fellow Rotaractors and Rotarians in the District, to learn more about Rotary, and to be inspired. It was a key event in my growth as a Rotaractor!"

If you want to hear about our District 5040 Rotaractors experiences at the RI Convention and RYLA North America you will have to wait for next month's newsletter. Don't want to wait? Invite one of them to speak at your Rotary club meeting!

June 30, 2018 -  A Special Thank You
A Special Thank You  -  The 2017-2018 Rotary Year has been an exceptional experience for both of us.   While final year end results are still being tallied, we know that the year has been a strong one for both Rotary and the clubs in our District.  The appreciation for all of this goes out to all of you - it is each and every Rotarian in our (now) 51 Rotary Clubs that make things happen, that make a difference in our communities throughout the year.   It is also each and every one of you that have made this Rotary year so special for both of us.

Thank you for your commitment and hard work, and thank you for making us so welcome through the year.   We will stay connected as we now move on to our Past Governor roles, but we both look forward to seeing you again in your home communities in the future.   THANK YOU for Making a Difference.

Life changing experience at Rotary Youth Leadership Award camp
Tristan Miura, 16, has travelled to the cloud forest of Honduras to study wildlife for two weeks. He has worked with children in the Dominican Republic for a week. Even after those global adventures, he says, “I didn't expect to have learned more about myself and those around me from a single speaker than I have in 13 years of schooling,” about his experience at four days of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp on Easter Weekend 2018 at Camp Elphinstone near Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast.
