In the small beach resort town of Bucerias, on the southwest coast of Mexico, there were no non-profit care homes for the elderly in the community and in the entire state of Nayarit when Rotarians Jim and Marilyn Moxin decided to found Casa de la Paz, which opened in July 2024. The Rotary Club of Richmond partnered with the Rotary Club of Oak Bay to support the new facility with two solar panels for. The Rotary Club of Richmond held a fundraising dinner at the Little Mexico Cantina in Steveston and contributed $2,667. With $1,333 from The Rotary Foundation through a District Grant the Richmond club donated $4,000 for the solar panels.
The facility provides full time care and quality of life for the low income, vulnerable elderly in Bucerias, who had been at risk of homelessness or who may have had difficulty caring for themselves. In addition to the 36 beds for residents Casa de la Paz also provides day care for 20+ elderly unable to care for themselves at home during the day and brought to the facility daily by family.
A total of 30 Rotarians from the two clubs also contributed volunteer labour in February 2024 to install the solar panels system. The system reduces operating costs of the facility and supports its sustainability.
