For the 12,000 residents of Terrace and area, including 2,000 children, and visitors to the community, the 150-acre Ferry Island park and campground, close to the city centre, provides a year-round play and recreation area -- trail network, off-leash dog area and artisanal features -- and during the summer half of the year, affordable accommodation often for music and sports events.

Rotary Clubs of Terrace and of Terrace Skeena Valley created a playground on Ferry Island over 20 years ago. The playground's original equipment was showing its age so the City wanted to update and expand it. On top of City of Terrace's $28,700 funding for the $40,000 playground upgrade Rotary Club of Terrace contributed $7,581.00 plus a Rotary District 5040 Grant of $3,800.

The 30 members of the Rotary Club of Terrace supported the project and seven members were actively involved in the project to help staff of the City who provided for the specialized labour and equipment needed for the installation and organized with the artist for the mural designed landscaping and mural.

Now, the Rotary Ferry Island playground includes an updated and restored play-structure, a new spring seesaw replacing an aging spring rocker, and an additional set of swings which now includes an accessible/adaptive bucket swing for children with diverse mobility or physical limitations and two standard swings, and a parent/tot swing.

The playground is newly fronted by an updated and extended, aesthetic landscape featuring plants and stonework. The playground has also been enlivened by the entire adjacent building now covered by a mural featuring a frog theme relevant to local Indigenous traditions. This building houses amenities and is open to campers and day users from May to September.

Seven Rotary Club of Terrace members took ownership of the financial planning, funding request, liaising with the project partner and suppliers, hands-on installation, work-day logistics and safety, and project reporting.
