With a focus on Education and Literacy -- one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus -- up to 250 kindergarten children from public, private and French schools in Powell River and Regional District are receiving a book in a bag through the Rotary-sponsored “Read to Me” program. Funded by the Rotary Club of Powell River with initial support of a District Grant from The Rotary Foundation, the $5,420 program is intended to encourage parents to read to their children.
Reading to children at an early age promotes literacy at an early age. The book, which has been written by Robert Munsch and available in French, plus book bag provide children with an opportunity to own a nice book and to encourage reading time between them and their parents.

The retail value of each bag and book is $27, but Scholastic Books has provided a 50% discount. Each book is provided in French for the children in French Immersion or the French School. Taws Cycle and Sports, of Powell River, was the supplier of the book bags.
Ten Rotarians were involved in choosing and sourcing the book and bag, assembling the books, bag, Rotary logo sticker and note and delivering the books in bags to the children.
