A new Rotary year has started. With that comes this monthly roundup of news for our Rotary District 5040 members. We kept it brief.

But looking back on the accomplishments of our District in the past year, under the capable leadership of District Governor Lorne Calder, our Foundation giving, which he now leads as committee chair, the District set several new highs, including total giving, which exceeded $1 million for the first time. Congratulations to all of you throughout the District.

We also introduced many new members to Rotary. While we lost more members than we’d like, our District membership committee is there to support clubs with a pilot membership project, and with ideas in both membership development and member retention.

In recent weeks it has been a great pleasure to attend the installation events at as many clubs as I’ve been able.  Not to mention the District installation!  It is a marvelous chance to celebrate what we’ve done in the past Rotary year, and to look forward.  We see the renewal that comes with fresh ideas, new (and continuing!) leadership at club and District.

We have reached a milestone in Rotary International as the year began with a new President, Jennifer Jones.  She’s the first woman president of RI, and proudly Canadian.  Jennifer’s Imagine Rotary tour, which began in St. John's, Newfoundland, recently included a stop in the Lower Mainland July 10, where she and her husband, Nick, attended four events, met many Rotarians and friends, and presented a new, positive image of Rotary to our communities.

District’s plans for 2022 – 23 include emphasis on our role in supporting clubs. We’re planning to expand our learning opportunities for some of the club leader positions as well as some favourites such as the use of Rotary Club Central and Clubrunner.  There’s also a million-dollar dinner planned for October 8 when we aim to generate well over $1 million for The Rotary Foundation.

Pat and I are looking forward to seeing most of you in September and October, when we hope to complete most District Governor club visits.

John
