The 1,000 volunteers of Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR) have saved the lives of nearly 3,000 people and assisted nearly 10,000 in trouble on coastal and some inland waters of BC in the past seven years. On 15 minutes call 24/7 year round the volunteers provide marine search and rescue services out of 30 rescue stations and respond to around 450-500 missions per year in all types of weather conditions at no cost to those they save or assist.
Rotary Club of West Vancouver Sunrise contributed $3,000 and $1,500 came through a District Grant from The Rotary Foundation towards the purchase of three sets of personal safety equipment for the RCMSAR volunteers in the West Vancouver rescue station.
Personal safety equipment sets are essential for the volunteers to go about rescuing and saving the lives of others as safely and efficiently as possible. Prior to the pandemic the volunteers shared the personal safety equipment sets. With the pandemic each volunteer had to have his own personal safety equipment set at the cost of $1,500. Over time, each equipment set needs to be replaced. In addition to providing each volunteer with a set the equipment wears out over time and has to be replaced.
Rotary Clubs would not be sustainable with out the annual donations/membership dues, of their members and we certainly would not be able to support projects without volunteers/partners to help organize/support fundraisers.
Volunteers of RCMSARS show appreciation and support for Rotary by volunteering at various events which raise money for Rotary to support other projects such as school scholarships. This also raises awareness of Rotary which then allows the club to do so much more.
