Before I start with this month’s newsletter I must acknowledge the passing on May 20th of my very good friend and mentor, Past District Governor Don Evans. Don, Deb and Deb’s brother were on holidays in Peru and they had just completed what was to be Don’s final train ride, disembarking in Cusco.
The moment we started on the Governor journey Don was there offering his friendship and support. I knew I could lean on and turn to him for advice, and I did.
Don had a special gift for leadership which I will continue to admire and strive to acquire. Always using the 4-way test to evaluate the situation and making sure all decisions were beneficial to all concerned. His leadership has shaped so much of our District through visioning and strategic planning and thankfully he has bestowed on us many tools to enable us to carry on and build on those foundations and reach our shared goals.
I know Don has touched many of us, such was his nature, and we all will cherish our time with him. I would like to take this opportunity to say how much I will miss him and to Thank Deb for sharing him with us all.
Don’s memorial will be on July 7th at the Railway Roundhouse in Squamish at 2:00. A perfect place for us to come together and celebrate his life, his legacy, in a building that he was instrumental in creating, surrounded by his beloved trains. More details will be posted on the District Website as well as sent out to all Rotarians via ClubRunner.
What great forethought to finish off our Rotary calendar with the theme of Fellowship.
Throughout our Rotary world in June we celebrate Fellowship. Fellowship among Rotarians leads to lasting friendships within our clubs and communities and far beyond our districts and countries.
Join the Rotary Friendship Exchange to Russia August 19 to September 2, 2019. A group of 10 to 12 people from our Rotary District 5040 will visit fellow members in Rotary District 2223. But hurry. Deadline to apply is June 15, 2019. Partners, family friends welcome. Visas are required.
On a beautiful sunny morning, over 120 Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, and friends gathered at the River Market on the New Westminster quayside for this year's Walk to End Polio.. The event was held to raise awareness about Rotary's goal to eradicate polio and to raise funds to help finish the task.. We were joined by Rotarians from the Philippines who are visiting on a Rotary Friendship Exchange. Numbers are not finalised, but close to $10,000 will have been raised from donations, sponsorship, and sales of End Polio shirts.
On Sunday May 12th, the four Rotary Clubs in the Sea to Sky corridor, Squamish, Whistler, Whistler Millennium and Pemberton, presented a cheque for $100,000 to the Squamish Hospice Society,
Our very dear friend to many in our Rotary District 5040, Past District Governor Don Evans, has suddenly passed away. While travelling in South America, with Deb and Deb's brother Mike, Don suffered a massive coronary yesterday. I know that I can speak for all of us, that we, our District and the Rotary World have lost a monumental force.
At the Rotary District 5040 conference in Sun Peaks, May 3 to 5, 2019, among the awards presented was the first Public Image Award. Three members of the District Public Image and Public Relations Committee reviewed the entries and recommended a winner.
