Vocational Service

Vocational Service is a way of life for Rotarians. It calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society. It is the essence of Rotary and sets us apart from other service organizations. Deb and I have seen Vocational Service in action in our clubs and communities all over our productive, service oriented District. It seems to be a fitting theme for the start of our new calendar year of 2018.

From its origins, Rotary has built a philosophy based upon integrity in businesses and professions. Rotary clubs and individual Rotarians are committed to vocational service and high ethical standards in all their interactions through our shared core values (Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity, Leadership), the Four-Way Test, and the Rotary Code of Conduct.  In fostering the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise, Rotary recognizes that all useful occupations have value and that the occupation of each Rotarian is an opportunity to serve society.

Vocational Service is sometimes difficult to describe, but you are practicing it when you talk about your own vocation in your club, and take time to learn about the vocations of other members. You are also practicing it when you use your professional skills to serve and work with your community. In the workplace and volunteering with others in the community, Rotarians, as business and professional leaders, can advance high ethical standards by setting a positive example among employees, associates, and the community and encourage ethical behavior.

Vocational Service is not just what you do, but how you do it: when you practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your own words and actions. Helping a young person achieve his or her career aspirations and guiding and encouraging others in their professional development are also Vocational Service in action. Demonstrating your personal commitment to high ethical standards in relations with customers, vendors, and business associates, treating each business interaction with care and consideration is Vocational Service in action.

We are now working with AG Lori Macala in the Cariboo area and her four club presidents to define projects to which these funds will be applied. The goal is to complete project definition by the end of January, 2018 and then to commence the disbursements to enable projects that will aid in community recovery and future fire prevention when / if another such emergency situation occurs.

Membership Update

Happy New Year!

It’s that time of year again when we find out who renewed their membership and who didn’t.  I hope you didn’t have any surprises that caused you to have to pay RI and District dues for the second half of this Rotary year for members that did not renew AND did not tell you they weren’t going to renew.  As of December 1st your District was PLUS 42 for membership.  As of January 1st, according to Rotary Club Central we are at PLUS 25.

If your club has a retention Chair and is using the Engagement Matrix you will not have membership surprises at mid-year or the end of the Rotary year.

We still have six months left in this Rotary year to hit our membership goals.  Keep up the focus.  If you need any further support we are here for you.

Regards,

Tom

"Peace" is the theme of the 2018 District Conference.

Peace may be the most important topic of our time.

Come to the 2018 Rotary District Conference where we will be "Peacing it Together" with speakers like Eduardo da Costa, who is a Rotary Peace Scholar and Global Peace Index Ambassador.

How peace and sustainability are linked: Presidential Peacebuilding Conference Feb 2018
Conflict and violence displace millions of people each year. Half of those killed in conflict are children, and 90 percent are civilians. Often conflict starts and continues over long periods in competition for dwindling resources and as environmental changes force people to migrate. The 1.2 million members of Rotary International, in 35,000 clubs around the world, refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. On February 10, 2018, in Vancouver, BC, Rotary is holding the first of its six presidential peacebuilding conferences around the world on the theme of environmental sustainability and peace..

Rotary service to our communities and the world gains from Foundation dinner
Once again, in this spectacular year of 2017, Rotary District 5040 has shown its outstanding generosity to The Rotary Foundation so gifts to our communities here in BC or somewhere in the world can continue. With the global generosity of Rotary members, through The Rotary Foundation, peacebuilding is reducing conflict, diseases are being fought, clean water and sanitation is being provided, mothers and children are receiving care, education is being delivered, and women are being supported in business.  The latest contribution was more than $30,000 US raised through the November 18 annual District 5040 Foundation dinner. Pictured here are President of the Rotary Club of Vancouver, Phil Webber, and Foundation Dinner Chair, Min Kuang.
