G'day

Fellow Rotarians:

District Governor John Anderson InstallationThis will be the first of many missives I send you throughout the year. I have named the traditional District Governor’s newsletter ‘District Happenings’ because I want it to reflect what is going on in District 5040 and to this end I need your help in sending me material. The plan is to get this bulletin out to you mid month and we will supplement it with a couple of ‘video newsletters’ with a little help from my friends.

Having met so many of you at PETS and during the five district assemblies, I feel I have been in this position for ages. I came away from all of those meetings buoyed with the enthusiasm and support of Rotarians around the province and I know that we are in for a great year. Now that the installation season is over, we are into summer mode and from Prince Rupert to Pemberton Rotarians are organizing parades, serving in beer RYLA Northgardens, racing ducks, fishing, golfing, bike-riding and barbecuing.  It was great to spend my first weekend as DG at RYLA Lake Else with some forty-five young leaders. Camp activities included search and rescue, dragon boating, team building and bench building. The extra efforts of the Rotarians from the two Terrace clubs in organizing, accommodating and supporting the weekend is commendable. It is clear, Rotary is alive and well in Terrace.

Congratulations to all the new presidents who by now have conducted their first meeting. Our RI President Ravi has given us a good theme to work with. ‘Be a Gift to the World’ provides us with the opportunity to give back for the many blessings and opportunities we have been given.  It is a chance to use our talents, our RI Governor Ravindranknowledge, our time and our resources to serve the community and the greater world. To continue to  ‘do good in the world’ we need new members to build our clubs and engaged and active members to keep them strong. Membership and support of the Foundation, ‘our charity’, are the keys to Rotary success and form the basis of my goals for this year. Support for youth programs and communications will also play a prominent role.

Invitations to the Day of Dialogue on November 21st will be out shortly and open registration will commence in September. Planning for the District Conference in Whistler is well under way and you can still take advantage of the early bird rates. Check out our website at www.celebraterotary.ca. Claire and I are looking forward to visiting your clubs in the fall. We start mid August with visits to the Prince George and Cariboo regions with stop-overs at the Youth Exchange Rebound Camp at Gavin Lake and the Tweedsmuir Trek near Burns Lake.

RYLA North

Meanwhile have a great summer and take some time to rest and relax with family and friends. Stay safe and let’s hope we are freed from the wild fires that John and Clairethreatened the Sunshine Coast and Pemberton earlier this month.  Claire and I would like to thank you for all the advice and good wishes we received at our installation night hosted by my home club in Tsawwassen. It was a fun night and we appreciated the creative gifts depicting various service projects throughout the district.

Let’s work together for the good of Rotary and let’s have a great time doing it!

Cheers

John

Message from RI President Ravi - Re: The Fight Against Polio
(Posted on Jul 23, 2015)
This is the longest the country has ever gone without a case of polio and a critical step on the path toward a polio-free Africa. We’ve come a long way since the bleak years when the virus reached its peak. It was only a decade ago that polio struck 12,631 people in Africa- three quarters of all cases in the world.
